A demolition under the lights - Full review of United’s cup game against Barnsley

Updated: Sep 23, 2024

The reds head through to the 4th round of the Carabao Cup following a 7-0 thrashing against League One Barnsley.

It was goals galore on Tuesday night under the floodlights of Old Trafford as United dismantled the Yorkshire visitors. In all fairness, the 6,500 travelling fans were spot on all night, and didn’t stop chanting, even as Eriksen slotted home his second and final goal of the night. Lesser said for the United fans as we weren’t necessarily in full voice on the night. Nevertheless, the backing of the lads was still present from the start to end (which we obviously don’t expect anything less of).

It was a lovely evening for a game of cup football on Thursday night, as the sun set perfectly over Trafford Park. Unfortunately for me, there was no stopping off at the bar near the docks this evening as it’s a school night, so straight to the ground it was. Me and my sister took a different route to the turnstiles by going left and through the Munich tunnel to arrive at the Stretford End. Soon after, we was approached by MUTV pre-match show host where I made my first (and hopefully of many) MUTV appearances. (Check out my X account for the video!)

Kick off came around and a very confusing choice of lineup was announced. I thought we may have seen the debut of Harry Amass following his very successful preseason with the reds. However, it was Toby Collyer who appeared to start left back in a makeshift midfield-defender role. (If there’s ever a time for Erik to try something like that out, it was then, and it turned out rather successful.)

In the last post, I talked about being able to dismantle teams and put 3/4 away. That’s exactly what we did, and more!

Rashford started off the rampage by getting his 2nd  in 2 games with a beautifully taken finish 15 minutes in. The game looked more than likely done when Garnacho put his first away before the half time break. Although the game was won by then, it was good to see the reds hungry to score more, especially Garnacho who was absolutely desperate to get his first hattrick for the reds. He looked very likely to get it too, but he just missed a beautiful chance midway through the second half. It was topped off by a Christian Eriksen brace which finished a dominating performance by the Dane, who was been really impressive the last 2 games.

The reds were in amazing form all night and put on an amazing display. Focus now is onto this Saturday where our attention turns to the dreaded fixture of Palace away. I’m thoroughly scarred from last years fixture so hopefully they can make amends for last year’s disappointment.

It was also nice to debut the 3rd kit at the Stretford End. I might have to wear it more often if we’re going to score 7.

As always, don’t forget to contact us with your opinions of the game with the possibility of featuring in next week’s blog.

My MOTM: Garnacho

Biggest impact: Rashford

Worst performance: None
